You can buy a great cat scratcher, but if it is tucked behind a chair in a room your cat rarely visits, it may never get used.
Placement is one of the most overlooked reasons cats choose the couch over a scratching board. Cats scratch to stretch, release energy, and leave visible and scent marks in places that matter to them.
So where should a cat scratcher go?
Start Where Your Cat Already Scratches
If your cat scratches one corner of the sofa, place the scratcher directly in front of it—not across the room. If they target a rug, put a horizontal board over or beside that area.
It may not be your ideal decorating choice, but it provides an alternative at the exact moment the urge appears. Once the habit is established, move the scratcher a few inches at a time if needed.
Place One Near a Sleeping Area
Many cats scratch after waking up. It is part stretch, part routine.
A scratcher near a favorite bed, window perch, or nap spot lets your cat stretch without searching for another surface. If the nearest option is an upholstered chair, that chair may become the default.
Choose a Social Area
Cats often scratch in noticeable locations because scratching also communicates, “I live here.”
A board in the family room, near a doorway, or along a daily route may get more attention than one hidden in a quiet corner. Convenient for humans does not always mean meaningful to a cat.
Keep It Stable
Even perfect placement will not help if the scratcher slides or rocks. Put it on a secure surface where your cat can lean in without it moving.
Match the orientation to your cat’s style too. Cats that target rugs may prefer a horizontal board, while cats that reach up sofa arms may want a vertical surface.
What About Multi-Cat Homes?
One scratching station may not be enough. Cats can prefer different locations, and one cat may avoid an area another regularly guards.
The best spot is rarely the emptiest corner. It is usually where your cat already sleeps, walks, plays, or scratches.
Place a stable PawHaven Cat Scratcher beside your cat’s current target and let the location do part of the training. When the right surface appears in the right place, protecting the furniture becomes much easier.
